My heart is still on the Nai'a http://www.naia.com.fj/ and I'm not all the way home yet!  Fiji was absolutely amazing...the "best doive trip evah" (said in my best Aussie accent)  The diving blew me away, but the crew of the Nai'a and the Nai'a itself have set the bar very high!  I've never had a bad crew on a liveaboard, but this crew was truly something special!  Saying goodbye to them was a very sad, sad event.

The diving, well...it was just phenomenal and lived up to (actually exceeded) my expectations for South Pacific diving!  Mantas (a big show actually), hammerheads, reef sharks, macro galore (including an ornate ghost pipefish that I found on the last day), the most beautiful soft coral gardens imaginable, near perfect weather and diving conditions for the week and a fabulous group of dive buddies.

We landed at LAX this afternoon and most are arriving home about now.  I'm in Los Angeles at my sisters now and fly back to Cozumel tomorrow night on the red-eye.   Fiji is 17 hours ahead of Los Angeles, so my body clock is a wreck right now.  I slept for 5 hours when I got here and now here I am at midnight wide awake!  My body thinks it's 5:00pm TOMORROW...haha!

Here are a few teaser photos for you :)  I really do hope to get a trip report and a slide show together for this trip since I actually got enough photos I'm proud enough of to fill a slide show :)  First priority will be catching up on work and e-mails...and then the slide show and trip report.

Glad you had a great time. I kinda knew you would. It will take you a few weeks before your bod feels completely comfortable in your home time zone. Meanwhile you'll be hugely productive while everyone else sleeps. Safe travels home...

Welcome back, and thanks for the photos! Brings back (all good) memories of Fiji and the Nai'a. I know what you mean about how special the crew is, and the people in Fiji in general are the nicest I've met anywhere.

Fiji is AWESOME and the Naia crew is the best on any liveaboard I've ever been on (that's 20+).  Mo was my buddy who taught me a little about Fijian culture and Eddie was the most amazing DM I've ever seen at work finding things.  Every night we'd spend on the mat with the crew as they played music and sang Fijian songs.

I can't wait to head back to Fiji in October for another liveaboard week.  This time I'm doing the Aggressor II which I've been on when it was the Tahiti Aggressor and it's a clone of the Palau Aggressor....2 of the most comfortable liveaboards I've ever been on.  Can't wait to dive those colorful waters in Fiji again.  This time I'm shooting it in HD so it should look spectacular on the HDTVs.

Hope you had a memorable trip......

Loved the photos. My wife and I are planning a trip to Fiji next June. Haven't decided yet on the Nai'a or one of the Aggressor boats. All 3 get great reviews but you can help me decide. The Aggressor site quotes a $350 "Cruise Fee" and a Fuel surcharge. I don't see either on the Nai'a site. Are these fees applied to the Nai'a. Thanks in advance and it sounds like a remarkable journey.

I don't have the liveaboard experience of some, but from my baseline the team on the Nai'a are the best I have seen so - far.  So glad you had a great time and perfect weather. By the end of the trip it is like you hanging out and diving with family.

Now if you are a female diver (single or not) and diving on the Galapagos Aggressor II you do get unlimited late night sexual solicitation

You had to love:  Interrupting those "special" moment kisses by the camera table, or over hearing "you are only married in your mind".

Unrelated rant and mussing in over.

Yep, no question they are one of the best.  We had 2 couples who were on their first liveaboard and we kept telling them how spoiled they were going to be now.

Someone here was debating between Nai'a and Aggressor.  I haven't been on the Fiji Aggressor, so I can't give an objective answer.  The Aggressor runs a great fleet, but the Nai'a was about 5 levels above the 3 Aggressors I've been on with regards to procedures, service, food quality, and crew ratio.  We had 17 passengers and 15 crew. Rather than a buffet style set-up for each meal, we were provided a menu with breakfast, lunch and dinner options for the following day and signed up for the meal we wanted.  All we did was sit down and each course was served to us.  If you changed your mind and wanted something different, no problem.  If you had a special dietary request, they would make you anything you wanted.  We always had a fish, chicken/beef and a vegetarian option.

I don't know about the Aggressor crew, but the Nai'a crew are also some talented indiviiduals and provided us with (optional) musical entertainment nightly.  They would gather on the dive deck, the back deck or the camera room (when it's cold) sit on the floor with their guitars and sing classic fijiaan tunes as well as some of our old favorite western tunes (Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, Brown Eyed Girl just to name a couple). They have beautiful voices and when the 15 of them get together and sing...the harmonies are mind blowing.

Marc...Mo is one of my favorites...he is like  big Fijiaan teddy bear and was so incredibly sweet...and what a voice on him!  I'll add that he was the best skiff driver EVAH!  WHen I hugged him goodbye the waterworks started :)

Captain Jonathan was very easy on the eyes so that became quite a running joke among the group :)

Sonia (cruise director/Instructor/DM) emulates fabulosity in every way, shape and form.  We were her last charter before departing for the Red Sea...but her replacement Jamie (who was also on board) is going to be an outstanding replacement.  We adored her as well.

No fuel surcharge for the Nai'a that was imposed on us.

Nai'a cabins are really spacious, moreso than the Aggressor cabins.

I loved he procedures for diving and if you're a photog...the camera room is second to none. We had 10 photogs and 2 videographers and there was ample space for all of us with electrical outlets for all of the recharge strobes and batteries as well as 2 big dedicated camera tubs.  The crew handled the camera gear with great care as well.

I wanna go back...NOW!

Did you use smaller boats to do your diving from?

Lots of sharks or a few? Troy's not to keen on lots of sharks, not sure I am either.
Was there alcohol on board?
What's the best time of year to go?
What was the vis like?
was there a cetain cabin you like better than anohter?

If you want to answer questions like this in your trip report, I can wait. See you in August. Scott

1.  All diving was done from the skiffs on the Naia and the Aggressor II uses a hydraulically operated boat to dive off.

2.  Average depth of diving was around 80' bottom but the best part of the dives was usually on the safety stop.  My average dive times were over an hr. each.

3.  In the pass the sharks abound but otherwise we'd occassionally see them.

4.  Alcohol was on board.  We had a couple that called themselves "eco divers" as they did a couple dives each day and then were drinking wine the rest of the day/night.

5.  Best time of year to go is a tough call....it's warmer water/less viz or cooler water/more viz.  We went in Feb. and the viz was pretty good but not stellar by Fiji standards.

6.  Best cabins were midship but they were all the same quality/layout.

The Naia crew is exceptional....they make the trip something special that I doubt the Aggressor crew will compare to.  I know the Aggressor crew can't be as talented musically as the Naia crew.  How many crews do you know that cut their own music CD....Naia did and those guys are great.  I used some of their music in my video....they're that good.  For a cultural experience I believe there is no equal to Mo, any liveaboard anywhere....he's unbelievable.  He treated me like a brother as soon we met.  No other liveaboard crewmember has ever been that hospitable and genuinely caring.  He is the spirit of Fiji I will always remember from my first trip there.

Did I send you my Naia Fiji video???  If not, I will so you get a look at the diving there.

Hi Marc... Robert sent me a copy of the dvd and it was awesome....I didn't know the Nai'a crew had cut their own cd...I did purchase some traditional Fijian music though...but I would have loved to had their music..cannot say enough good things about the crew they made the trip over the top for all of us

yes you did Marc and you did an Fantastic job! The video is awesome, I think now we have watched it at least 3 times. I would opt for colder temps to have good vis.  So when is that?  thanks for all the answers. I know when, if, we go, we will choose this crew and ship. Looking forward to all of the reports, can't wait. hopefully 2010...

You video paints a picture that is unbelievable. PS. please email me your address again. Scott

Did you use smaller boats to do your diving from?
All diving is done from rigid hull inflatable skiffs. The crew handles your gear for you between dives. You just carry your fins and mask. They take care of loading your camera on the skiff and hand it in after you do a back roll entry. Both skiffs have specially designed ladders if you don't want to climb over the side to get back in the skiff. All the dives are live boat pick up so you don't have to navigate.

quote:

What was the average depth of most of the diving?
Average would be quite shallow because on almost every dive to top of the reef is at safety stop level so you can spend a long time at 20 ft. Most dives start out going as deep as 100 ft (if you want) and working your way up shallower. Since you are in charge of doing your own dive, you don't have to go to 100 if you don't want to go that deep. Following the DM is optional.
quote:

Lots of sharks or a few? Troy's not to keen on lots of sharks, not sure I am either.
With the exception of Negali Pass, you have to look to see the sharks, so not generally many sharks.
quote:

Was there alcohol on board?
Beer and/or wine is included with dinner. Cold beer is available whenever you want to stop diving for the day, but you are expected to make a note of your consumption on the "honor bar" sheet. On our trip, many passengers stopped at the duty free store in the Nadi airport and bought a bottle of whatever to share on the boat. In short, if you wanted a drink, it was easy to get one.
quote:

What's the best time of year to go?
I would pick their winter again. It is cooler and dryer then. By cooler, I mean it is still quite warm when the sun is shining especially when on land because it was pretty humid. I would hate to be there during their rainy season with corresponds with their summer.
quote:

What was the vis like?
Variable. It depended on which way the current was flowing. Did you know that there are tides in Fiji with corresponding tidal currents?
quote:

was there a cetain cabin you like better than another?
Cabins 1 and 2 back up against the engine room, so they might have more engine noise at night when the boat is underway. Cabin 10 is pretty small and only has twin bunk beds, so that one isn't probably not suitable for a couple. All the cabins have their own sink, shower, and toilet. Any cabin in between those cabins would be great.

Like Marc and Christi have said, the crew is simple superb. The food was also great. In addition to 2 choices for breakfast, 2 choices for lunch, and 3 choices for dinner, there is also the option of having what the crew is having for their meal. Just have to write "Crew Food" as your choice for that meal. I did that without knowing what the food would be the first night and the lamb curry was fabulous.

Getting pickup up from Wananavu Beach Resort was super nice. It gave us time to "recover" from the flights getting to Fiji, plus we didn't have to get a day room before being able to board the Nai'a. The flight from LAX arrives in Nadi around 5:00 AM and you can't board the boat until the afternoon.

earlier, this is a "Dream Trip" for 2010. We will have to see how this year, the economy, etc., pans out. Hopefully, we can get a group together for a trip in 2010. Would you say this was the best time of year to go? Also, like the idea of staying at the resort you mentioned for a couple of days. Did you snorkel or dive there? Anyway, thanks, I know you all will post lots of pics and reports and am truly looking forward to each and everyone. Scott

This certainly sounds like a dream trip and I can't wait to see more pics.  The Nai'a is the boat my travel agent highly recommends and I've got my eye on doing a trip in 2010.
If group members spent time at any of the resorts in Fiji, I'd love to get some feedback on that too. I'd love to combine a week on the Nai'a with some time spent at a land-based op.
I'm glad that everyone had a wonderful trip and please keep the pics and reports coming!  Robyn

Hi Robyn,

We did spend a few days at Wananavu resort which is on the other side of the island from where the Nai'a departs from...but since we had the whole boat, Naia picked us up at the resort..it was a close to perfect trip all around :)  I can't say it was perfect...because then I'd have nothing left to look forward to :)

What airport did you fly into? I can't find any information on flying into Nadi or Suva anywhere on the Nai'a website...

Yep, it was a Dream Trip for me too. I have no idea where to go next. Getting my wife certified is my next goal so she can go too, where ever that is.

I'd go in June or July again. I think that is a great time of year there. Going as a group is definitely the way to go. If you charter the whole boat, you get more flexibility in addition to complimentary nitrox for everyone on the trip.

I did 2 days of 2 tanks dives at the resort, kind of like a warm up for the liveaboard. While the diving was good from the resort, it wasn't quite as good as the dive we did from the Nai'a. The shore diving at the resort was reported to be "poor quality".

We flew into Nadi. I think all the international flights go into Nadi. We flew on Pacific Air from LAX. Flight time was around 10 hours going there. Ambian made it seem like a 3 hour flight for me. Bus ride to Wananavu was longer than the 2 1/2 hours they claim on their website. It was actually more like 3 1/2 hours

was it ok or bad? you said the ride was long, how about from this resort to the boat? how was the resort? thanks, scott

I didn't shore dive, so I don't have an opinion as to the quality.

The Nai'a picked us up from the resort.

The resort was very nice.

One more leg to go!  I'm at IAH now waiting for my last leg home...departs in 2 hours!  I actually can't wait to get home and sleep for HOURS in my own bed until my body wants to wake up...this travel is exhausting.  I actually feel like I have the flu (achy, feverish, weak, and no appetite AT ALL)

Worked on my slideshow some on the plane...until my laptop battery went dead...so I'm actually optimistic that I'll have it done sooner than I think :)

Here's another teaser...even though I said I wasn't going to give y'all anymore :)

The quality isn't great on this...but considering the water quality (bcause it was full of plankton that they were feeding on) and the fact that I forgot to turn off one of my strobes...it's not THAT bad :)

Sonia, the DM and I actually spent all but the first 10 minutes of the dive off the wall in the blue with this guy and then 4 of his buddies joined and they put on a show for us for the better part of 45 minutes.  It was breathtaking and I was really wishing I had a video camera!

I can't believe I didn't cave and come on this trip!! I am kicking myself right now.
Count me in for the next one!
I'll see ya in about 10 days. I had to reschedule my trip to give my shoulder a couple more weeks in therapy but it's really coming along nicely now! Still might need a little help getting into the boat...we'll see. I might surprise myself.
I'll send you an email when I'm getting there. You and David better save some margaritas for me!

Edited to add:
P.S.
Christi, Don't think I forgot about you calling me from the airport on your way to Fiji to rub it in.
"I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog to!"

Waiting for Lloyd to win the lottery.  I just wrote a check for the final payment for our Galapagos trip today.

You had to love:  Interrupting those "special" moment kisses by the camera table, or over hearing "you are only married in your mind".

Unrelated rant and mussing in over.
I didn't hear that particular quote (I guess because I'm not married) but I hope you don't think that having an unsolicited tongue thrust into one's mouth counts as a "special" moment. Besides, there are horney DMs at resorts too. Not to mention divers.

we're working it now...we're calling it our "Dream Trip" because right now, who knows what things will cost in a couple of years. 2010, or 2011. Of course all the depends on money, flights, etc.

Beautiful pictures Christi!
Every liveaboard I've ever been on rotates crew, the Nai'a does not! Every trip its the same crew, they are there own village and if you have been to Fiji you know what that means. When the crew takes a break the Nai'a sits in port and doesn't sail with a "B" crew like other boats.
Still the best liveaboard I've ever been on by any measure.
