According to a recent study by the non-profit conservation group Oceana and Duke University, protecting sharks is more than sound ocean policy—it's also good business. "Sea the Value: Quantifying the Value of Marine Life to Divers” finds that sharks are worth more through ecotourism ($212 million) than in fisheries ($19 million). But these top predators continue to be victims of shark finning, in which fishermen cut off their fins and discard the body at sea. This unsustainable fishing practice has helped decimate many shark populations, reducing some by as much as 99 percent.

To stop the practice of shark finning in U.S. waters, Oceana is asking divers to join a petition campaign to enact the Shark Conservation Act of 2008. Thanks to more than 11,000 concerned ocean-lovers, an earlier petition drive helped get the bill passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. Now Oceana is asking for your support to pass the version awaiting approval in the U.S. Senate.

To join the petition, visit http://takeaction.oceana.org/t/7238/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=25161

Dive in today and tell your senators to support the Shark Conservation Act of 2008.

For more information on Oceana visit:

Thank you Keith,
We have to do all we can to protect sharks, the motion picture business has give a such a bad reputation to sharks that people are even happy to hear that certain species are disappearing.
I am a big shark fan and as a dive instructor I do all I can to protect them and make every one aware around me.
I hope all of us who understand a little more about the situation are doing the same.

Hi Keith
this is an extrememly worthwhile and important issue and one that I have a real interest in becoming involved in - however - I am in Canada - how can I get involved from here?  Can you point me in the right direction?  I think sharks are amazing and want to be involved in ensuring they are around for many many centuries - any advice is greatly appreciated.  I can't seem to find a way to get involved from here - perhaps I just don't know where to look??

I like shark steaks but to Kill a shark just for its fin is a terrible waste. But this bill doesn't really stop shark finning. It only requires that if a shark is caught within "US" waters and its going to be off loaded, in US territories, it has to be landed whole.or at least all the parts have to be accounted for. Once on land they can fin the shark and dump it in a trash can for a land fill or in a river..
This bill won't stop the Japanese long liner fishing boats from catching sharks in US waters then going farther out and finning them as long as they don't bring the catch into the US area's.
Most shark fins aren't delivered here, they're delivered to Japan,
its better they use the sharks as food or dumped at sea for the other creatures to eat, than to off load them into some garbage truck.

I'm not kidding. I'd do it in New York minute and wouldn't even think twice. Those and those that get off killing wildlife and marine life have no place on the planet as far I'm concerned, just NO tolerance for em or their enablers... ........

Done, and I encourage everyone to participate.  There is nothing like seeing a shark patrolling the open water, wanting nothing more than to be left alone (or looking for a quick meal).

Shark finning needs to be outlawed world wide, IMHO.

Thanks for the opportunity to help, albeit, just a little!!

"Man fined R1.5m for shark fins

06/04/2009 14:16 - (SA)

SA seizes shark fishing boat

Cape Town - The skipper of a Taiwanese fishing vessel has paid a R1.5m fine for contravening permit conditions, the department of environment affairs said on Monday.

This was the highest fine ever imposed for such a transgression, the department said.

The Chien Jui number 102 was seized in Cape Town harbour two weeks ago, and law enforcement authorities confiscated more than 1.6 tons of dried shark fin and 5.1 tons of shark carcasses from it.

The fine was for contravening permit conditions for foreign vessels entering the South African exclusive economic zone.

The number of fins did not match the number of shark bodies, and the discrepancy was beyond "tolerance" limits.

Department officials also arrested a man early on Monday morning near Hermanus after more than 5,000 perlemoen (abalone) were found in the vehicle he was driving.

He was expected to appear in the Hermanus Magistrate's Court later this week.

Boat Captain Survives Near Fatal Shark
BitePosted: 8:21 am EDT July 14, 2009Updated: 10:53 am EDT July 14, 2009

MIAMI, Fla. -- A veteran boat captain had to be rushed to shore after he was bitten by a shark. Captain John Cooper takes visitors and swimmers off the coast of Miami, but during one of his excursions he was attacked by a shark.Cooper says, when the shark bit him on the leg, there was nothing he could do."I had him with my hand, but you know you really can't stop them [because] you don't have any leverage," Cooper said.Doctors say Cooper was lucky because the shark narrowly missed hitting a major artery. Captain Cooper said it will not stop him from going back out on his boat.

http://www.wptv.com/news/local/story/Teen-shark-bite-victim-speaks-from-hospital/syG37flA3kaIrJj2ewYXsA.cspx

WEST PALM BEACH, FL--A fun spearfishing trip to the Bahamas turned into a big scare for Derek Mitchell and his father Dale.

Derek, his father, and some neighbors were spear fishing off Spanish Cay, when they noticed a couple of sharks close by.
Then, they say, one of the guys they were with caught a fish and did not bring it up in time.

A 7 pound Bull shark got a whiff, and headed right for them.
"Because Derek didn't have a fish, I knew the shark would turn around and go away," said Dale Mitchell.
The shark did turn away, but seconds later, it turned around and grabbed onto Derek's' calf.

"I didn't even know I got bitten, I thought I just got bumped by the shark, it didn't even go through my mind 'til I saw some blood," said Derek.
Dale and some of the guys on the boat used a spear to scare the shark away, but it was too late, the bite was very deep, and Derek could hardly move.

After he got onto the boat, they rushed to get the teen to a hospital for treatment.
Within hours, they charted a plane to fly Derek back to Palm Beach International Airport, where paramedics were standing by.

When he arrived, paramedics rushed him to St. Mary's Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to clean and close the wound.
The bite punctured Derek's Achilles tendon, but doctors were able to repair a lot of the damage.

They say the teen should be walking with the help of crutches in the next few weeks.

From the Shark Divers Blog (also, if you're here, you will love the chumslick blog ... bookmark/RSS it!):

In the Bahamas only four marinas have agreed to support this initiative and become "shark free" thanks largely to the efforts of Duncan Brake, Jillian Morris, staff members from Bimini Sands Hotel and Marina Katie and Grant and the staff at Cape Eleuthera Institute.

In Fiji, thanks to one mans ongoing efforts, Stuart Gow, 17 marinas have signed on pledging to stop the shark slaughter in their waters.

This week another 12 foot Tiger was taken by a Florida sport fishing vessel in the Bahamas. It is estimated as many as 10-15 animals are taken each year in this manner. While the numbers are anecdotal they do tell a story of an adult Tiger fishery that runs contrary to the entire Bahamian dive industry and commercial shark diving operations impacting five operators in the region.

There is a vehicle to stop the slaughter, all that's missing is the desire:

1,239-pound tiger caught aboard Ticket  (August 11, 2009)

The well-known Port Canaveral charter boat Ticket — skippered by Capt. Ed Dwyer — took a group over to the Bahamas for a weekend fishing trip. While there, the group did very well catching yelloweye, queen and yellowtail snapper. But the anglers lost several rigs to what was believed to be a large shark that was picking off catches as they were reeled to the surface, according to Candy Dwyer.

Finally, the shark that was eating their catches and rigs bit a bait on a rig that used a cable as leader material. Garett Vanorman picked up the Shimano 80W and began a battle that lasted 1-hour and 15 minutes.

Once the shark died, the whole crew was needed to haul the big tiger shark through the boat's tuna door. It measured 12 feet, 6 inches in length, 88 inches in girth and weighed 1,239 pounds. The shark was filleted and its meat was distributed to Bahamian residents where the Ticket was docked.

Inside its stomach, the anglers found a whole loggerhead turtle.Complete Story

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local-beat/Shark-Attack-Reported-Near-Carlsbad-56377152.html

A woman was attacked by a baby Great White shark off the coast of Carlsbad less than a week ago, suffering bites to her foot and calf.

Lifeguards working along the beach have been told of the attack and say it's very uncommon in our waters.

According to Bethany Edmund, whose account of the experience appears on the Shark Research Committee website, she was taking pictures with her new underwater camera at Terramar, the popular surfing spot around 4:30 p.m. August 25 about 250 to 300 feet from shore.
She writes that she spotted a sea bass jump in front of her while she was in the water. As she tried to take a picture, she felt a sharp pain in her right foot.

"Thinking I might have kicked the reef, I shrugged it off and continued taking photographs," she wrote. "About 30 seconds later I felt the same sharp pain and, this time, I began to swim away from the area."

Seconds later, as she was swimming Edmund said she was hit on the upper right thigh and "propelled about 1 foot out of the water."

She realized she was being attacked and started to body surf toward shore. She felt something grab her calf and pull her back under the water.

"I ignored what had just occurred and caught another wave to the beach. This time I felt the same sharp pain in my left calf, but this time I was dragged under water and shaken for 4 – 5 seconds," Edmund wrote. "During this struggle I accidently kicked the shark and it released me."
She contacted lifeguards the day after the attack and described the shark as about 6 feet in length with a dark blue/black top and a white belly.

We spoke with one Encinitas lifeguard who had been told of the attack. "A shark specialist looked at her injuries and confirmed the bites are those from a baby Great White," said Elena Tellechea. "But the wounds didn't even cut through the skin."

Tellechea said it's not common at all in our area to have a shark bite a swimmer off the Carlsbad shoreline.

One Carlsbad lifeguard, Tim in Tower 22, advises swimmers to report any attack like this one to lifeguards right away so they can assess the situation and advise other surfers and swimmers to get out of the water to avoid an attack.

A man has been bitten by an angel shark at an aquarium in North Queensferry.

The 23-year-old staff diver suffered between 15 and 20 lacerations, each roughly a centimetre long, in the attack at Deep Sea World.

He was bitten on the hand by an angel shark, also known as a monkfish, which is usually about 5ft (1.5m) long.

The man's wounds were dressed by paramedics and he was later released. Deep Sea World has begun an investigation into the incident.

In a statement, Deep Sea World bosses said: "A member of staff had received an injury while diving in the aquarium's main ocean display.

"Initial reports would indicate the male member of staff received cuts to his hand after apparently being bitten by an angel shark - a native shark species which is also known as a monkfish.
"The member of staff was treated at the aquarium but did not require hospitalisation.

"A full investigation is currently being carried out into the incident."
The centre has been trying to raise awareness of shark conservation, as part of European Shark Week which ends on Sunday.

The angel shark is an ambush predator which lies in wait for unsuspecting prey to venture close enough before attacking them.

The Brevard County Rescue says the boy, who is from out of state, was bit on his foot and upper leg. He was transported to Cape Canaveral Hospital by Brevard County Rescue.

Rescue officials say this is the second shark biting in the area in the last two weeks.

In a related action, the FWC has proposed a draft rule that would prohibit all recreational and commercial harvest of lemon sharks from Florida waters.

Lemon sharks are slow-growing, produce relatively few offspring and are highly susceptible to fishing pressure, especially when they aggregate in shallow waters close to the shore. The Commission's proposed action is intended to limit the potential of overharvesting lemon sharks in state waters.
A final public hearing on the proposed lemon shark rule will be held during the February FWC meeting in Apalachicola.

The presentations on shark management and lemon sharks used at the meeting are available online.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (WSVN) -- A man has been hospitalized with a wound to his arm after his friends said he was attacked by a shark.
A friend of the victim said the men were out spear-fishing about two and a half miles out from Elliot Key Wednesday morning. The friend said the victim caught a barracuda and when he reached out to get it, a shark believed to be a 12-foot long bull shark bit his arm.
The man was transported to South Miami Hospital in unknown condition.

Fish Hoek - "It came from below and grabbed the man. Part of his body was gone," said a woman who watched in horror as a shark ripped apart a tourist in Fish Hoek.

The victim, from Zimbabwe, was on holiday in Cape Town for the month to attend the wedding of his life partner's daughter.

According to Ian Klopper, NSRI spokesperson, the victim was attacked at about 15:15 where he was standing chest-deep in the water, about 100m from the beach, as he was busy adjusting his diving goggles. Lifeguards later found only the goggles.

Alison Kock from the Shark Spotter Programme and Shark Centre in Kalk Bay, said he was presumably attacked by a Great White shark. "They are capable of such an attack," she said.

Stood near rocks

A witness, Kathy Geldenhuys from Fish Hoek, who was sitting on the beach and saw the attack, said the man was in the water up to about his waist.

"He was standing near the rocks and my husband said, if a shark should go there now, he wouldn't have a chance."

According to her, just after her husband said these words, they saw an "incredibly big" shark attacking the man. "It came from below and grabbed the man. Part of his body was gone."

Geldenhuys says the shark turned around and pulled the rest of the man's body down into the water.

"I yelled: there's a shark in the water, there's a shark. There were about 30 people in the water then. They only got out of the water when I started yelling."

The water where the man had been standing was dark with blood.

Flag raised after attack

She said she ran to the lifeguards' club house.

According to her, they immediately sounded the sirens and hoisted the white flag, which indicates that sharks have been spotted. Before the attack, Geldenhuys said, that flag had not been raised.

Kock said that two witnesses confirmed how the attack took place.

She said that only the black flag was hoisted, which indicates poor visibility.

According to Kock, the black flag indicates that, due to the weather, the visibility is poor for the shark spotters. She also said that over the past two weeks only one shark was spotted near Fish Hoek.

November Filander, police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, but couldn't confirm the victim's name. He did say that the man's partner is being treated for trauma.

All beaches closed

On Tuesday evening rescue teams searched in vain for his body. The search will continue on Wednesday morning.

Howard Gold of the city council's coastal management unit said that all swimming beaches from Glencairn to Muizenberg have been closed until further notice.

Keith Matthews, spokesperson for WP lifeguards, said a warning has been raised from Strandfontein to Mnandi, but the beaches aren't closed.

According to him, there were three shark sightings near Mnandi's swimming beach last month.

"Swimmers were immediately asked to come out of the sea," he said.

The city council and the NSRI sent out a warning on Tuesday, shortly before the incident, to warn swimmers and surfers about the increasing number of sharks near the coast in False Bay, especially between Sunrise beach and Fish Hoek.

Recent shark attacks

This is not the first shark attack on the False Bay coast.

Tyna Webb, 78, died on November 15 2004 when a Great White shark attacked her at Sunny Cove near Fish Hoek.

Henri Murray, 22, a Matie, was ripped apart by a Great White shark in June 2005 at Miller's Point near Simon's Town.

The Paralympic swimmer Achmat Hassiem, 27, lost his leg on August 13 2006 in an attack by a Great White shark at Sunrise beach near Muizenberg. He and his brother, Taariq, were taking part in a lifeguard exercise when the incident took place.

Andrew Smith (14 at the time) was surfing at the Point in Strand in November 2007 when a shark got hold of both his feet. He survived fortunately, with only scars to show for the ordeal.

http://news.ufl.edu/2010/01/28/shark-bite-scale/

Trauma doctors could soon assess shark bites the same way they diagnose a first or second-degree burn. University of Florida researchers have developed a first-of-its-kind shark bite severity scale.

Dr. Ashley Lentz/UF surgeon: “A level one injury is a very small laceration, results in a very small amount of blood lose. However, the level five injury is a very significant injury that may result in severe damage to a blood vessel, a large blood vessel that results in very rapid blood lose and death.”

On average, sharks bite about sixty people each year around the world, and most attacks occur in Florida waters. The scale’s designed to give emergency care providers a universal language to describe shark bites and to educate the public that the majority of shark attacks are not deadly.

Dr. Ashley Lentz/UF surgeon: “Many people think that shark attacks are catastrophic, that is just not true. The reality of shark attacks are very small cuts, abrasions, bruises, things of that nature, that quickly mended.”

Dr. Lentz calls the scale a starting point in an attempt to educate medical professionals and teach them how to care for shark bites.

This sounds like a case of Shallow Water Blackout followed by some scavaging.

The body of a 31-year-old spearfisherman from Inarajan who died last week had shark bites, but those were unlikely the cause of his death, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Aurelio Espinola said yesterday.
Andrew Duenas went missing last Thursday. His remains, recovered Friday, had semi-circle cuts that look like bite patterns around his torso, Espinola said.
A local fisheries biologist agrees with Espinola that it was unlikely sharks killed the fisherman.
"I have been here for 17 years, and I haven't seen anybody who was killed by sharks," Espinola said.
The village of Inarajan is reeling from Duenas' death, said Mayor Franklin Taitague.
Duenas' immediate family is grieving privately.
Taitague mourns as Duenas' uncle and a former spearfisherman.
Mayor concernedTaitague said Duenas used to fish with another nephew, David Siguenza, a spearfisherman who disappeared in the waters off Merizo in November 2008.
Family members camped on the shoreline for five days while authorities swept the sea for Siguenza. Eventually, they had to give up the search.
Each time Taitague drives through his village and sees free divers swimming out to sea, he stifles the urge to swim out and remind them of the dangers they face.
"I am very concerned for their safety," Taitague said yesterday. "These divers, when they go out in the water, perhaps they are kind of challenging Mother Nature's strength. I am very much hoping that our divers will respect the waters and what they can do."
About 20 years ago, Taitague used to spearfish, but he stuck to the shallows and let the big fish escape. He would rather catch two little fish than risk his life trying to nab a big one, he said.
"As much as I don't want to expect any injuries or accidents, sometimes I feel I should swim out there and ask them to be careful," Taitague said. "We can only go as far as remind them of safety."
No threatBrent Tibbatts, a fisheries biologist at the Guam Department of Agriculture, said there's no record of anyone ever being killed by a shark on Guam, he said.
In fact, most of the shark attacks here happen when the animal is provoked or attracted by a bleeding fish that is hooked or speared, Tibbatts said.
Most of the sharks that live near Guam aren't aggressive and the sharks that are aggressive are too small to be very lethal, he said.
It is more likely that a tiger shark bit Duenas after he died from something else, Tibbatts said. Tiger sharks are large enough to attack a person, but are renowned for scavenging, not hunting, he said.
Also, spearfishermen and tiger sharks don't hunt in the same areas. Tiger sharks stay far from the shore, Tibbatts said.
DangersUnlike most hobbies, free diving can become more dangerous with experience, said Gerald "Skip" Perry, a spearfisherman who started diving deeper in 2003.
If you dive deep often, your body learns to ignore the alarms that send normal people rushing to the surface, gasping for air. Experienced divers can stay underwater for too long without discomfort, then pass out on their way to the surface.
In 2007, Perry had to save a fellow spearfisherman who passed out 14 feet from the surface. The fisherman had waited at the bottom for too long and would have died if he was alone, Perry said.
Experienced free divers must learn to head back up before their body tells them to, he said.
"We get seduced into staying too long chasing a big fish. Then we end up shooting a big fish and fighting him to the surface. ... It's not worth it. It's just a hobby and not worth losing your life for a ... fish," Perry said.

http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local-beat/Fisherman-Attacked-by-Shark-83821402.html

Less than a week after a man was attacked and killed by a shark in Stuart, another man was attacked on Florida's East Coast.
On Saturday, the victim, whose name was not released, was fishing in the water off Riviera Beach when a 6-foot spinner shark took the bait. The man swam farther in the water to cut loose the shark, but that turned out to be a very bad idea.
"I'm looking at him and I'm thinking, 'Geez, I wouldn't do that,'"one witness told WPTV.
The man grabbed the shark with both hands trying to get the hook out. Bad idea No. 2.
The thrashing shark, none to happy with his predicament, spun and bit the fisherman on his lower leg after it was freed.
According to a witness on scene, he had about six puncture marks on him. He was treated at a West Palm Beach Hospital.
Officials said red flag warnings were on the beach because spinner sharks routinely spawn on the coast this time of year.
