I took a trip to the Philippines in late Feb / Early March.  First time ever in the western pacific and it was fantastic!  Saw a ton of rare "muck" type creatures (nudibranchs, wonderpuss, single blue ring octo, Flamboyant Cuttlefish and much much more) as well as a lot of colorful corals and reef fish.

Anyways I posted a video of the trip, one underwater and one of a short day hike we took into the rain forest on Bohol.  Let me know what you think.  It's best to hit play on the Vimeo page to get it to start loading, then hit pause and wait for it to fully load, then hit play again to start it playing.  That way it won't pause during playback so much.

I haven't watched the topside video, but the UW one was superb! What an assortment of Nudis! I dove Anilao one day, and now I wish I could spend a whole week there.

Thanks for posting this.

Roger, That was fantastic footage, excellent color and clarity, it had a little of everything. Just an all around super presentation.

I was in Anilao from Feb 20-28th, and then in Bohol from Mar 1-4.  So about 2 weeks.  I dove 11 days, 4 dives a day, so 44 dives.  About 70 min avg per dive I would say.  We really got a lot covered in not that much time.  I came with a species list and the folks at Club Oscellaris and Bohol Divers really helped me to get to everything on my list that they knew the location/time for.

more cryptic critters and UWPS's (usual Western Pacific subjects) crammed into that video than most divers' 20 videos are able to capture.

Whets my appetite for next week's Puerto Galera trip.

Wow, what a fantastic video.  Thanks for sharing.  One day I will make there.  So many places to dive so little time and money.

Roger,
Thank you so much for sharing your video memories of your trip - it was really beautiful.  Sure does make me want to head in that direction for a trip in 2010.
What were the water temps like in Feb/March?
What is the best time of the year to go there, for good viz, good weather and all the other usual questions?
- Pat

For dry weather and calm seas best is prob Feb-April.  In Bohol water temps were 80-82, in Anilao usually always 78.  In Anilao one site got up to 80 briefly, another down to 75 but for the most part it was 78 everywhere there.  There never was any thermocline to speak of anywhere, and I spent a lot of time around 100-120' in Bohol.

There were a lot of interesting muck critter at Anilao for sure.  I'm really hoping to go somewhere with more pristine reefs though later this year, maybe Indonesia  (Komodo, Alor or Raja Ampat) or perhaps a trip going to Caroline Island north of Bora bora if that works out.

I know what you mean, I wish I had the time/money to go to all the places I want to see.  Maldives, Indonesia, French Polynesia, Thailand...I'm depressing myself just thinking of where I can't afford to go!

Thanks for sharing.

A lot of the critters I saw on your video brought back great memories of the critters I saw in Indonesia last year.

that is one outstanding piece of video amigo. Thank you for sharing it. I dived Anilao twice from the Outrigger Resort. I saw plenty and loved every minute of it but you hit the Holy Grail amigo. Very well done!

Makes me want to rush back. The dive sites Basura totally blew me away!

Anilao rocks!

Peace

I used Club Oscellaris in Anilao and Philippine Fun Divers in Bohol.   I would use them again, especially Club Oscellaris.  They went out of their way to help me find the animals I was looking for and provide me with the equipment I wanted (tanks specifically).

I desperately want to get to Indonesia this year or next.  I'm strongly considering Komodo if I can swing it.  It's so much more expensive that the Philippines were though.

The muck diving around Anilao is fantastic.  I think if I were to design a Philippine dream vacation I would spend 5-6 days in Anilao videotaping muck critters, then go back to Manila and fly to Palawan and take a liveaboard trip out to Tubbataha for wide angle and reef fish.  Flying from Manila to Puerto Princesa is very inexpensive, so it's not as prohibitive as you might think cost wise.  The Tubbataha reefs have much better protection from overfishing/exploitation than other sites in the Philippines.

The knowledge of the dive guides at Club Oscellaris was fantastic, they really helped me locate a lot of the rarer muck creatures I didn't think I would find.  A lot of this stuff I thought was only in Indonesia, I was pleasantly surprised to encounter so much in Anilao.

Thanks Roger!

I noticed that you use L&M housing.  Do you use different lenses?  I have the macro lens, but I haven't had a lot of luck with it.

In the Philippines I used the Fathom imaging 90 degree lens on some shots, on others I used the standard lens and a macromate flip macro adaptor.  That way I could shoot normal and then flip the macro in and out for macro shots.

I used a Sony SR12 camcorder and L&M Sunray 2000 lights.

Thanks for the info!  It is definitely time for me to upgrade!!!  I am still using the HC1.

What is the macromate flip macro adaptor?  I don't remember seeing anything like that in the L&M catalog.  Do you think it would be a better investment to get some good video lights or to upgrade the camera?

Sorry for all the questions, but I would love to bring home some videos that look more like yours!

The macromate flip adaptor is a 3x macro lens that flips in and out of the way as needed.  it clamps onto the outer surface of the standard zoom through wide angle lens that the Bluefin housings come with.  Right now I have a Bluefin Pro housing and a Sony XR520v camcorder, I sold the SR12 and the bluefin housing.  The Bluefin pro comes with a flat port and a flip macro lens that's internal, like a flip filter.
