I was going through some old books my wife had gotten in the library ... she's the town librarian  .. and found this old newspaper clipping.  It's from the Boston Herald and the photo is by Warren Petriquin.  The caption is, " FROGMEN IN THE CHARLES--Richard E. Anderson of Arlington adjusts the equipment of Eleanor F. Champion, both Boston Universtity students, as they practiced diving yesterday."

My guess is 1955-1960 vintage?  Pretty neat picture.

Just found this about the photographer:

"The Boston Globe, April 19th, 1997.  A funeral will be held today for Warren E. Patriquin of Wenham, a retired photographer for the Boston Herald Traveler, who died Wednesday in Shaughnessy-Kaplan Hospital in Salem. He was 75. Mr. Patriquin was born in Arlington and played trumpet in the Pat Warren Band as a young man. He was a photographer for the Herald Traveler for about 30 years until his retirement in 1972."

There was a well known West coast diver by the name of Dick Anderson, I wonder if it is the same one.

It was just a clipping, so the date was not on it.  The photographer worked at the paper from the 1940's until 1972, but I think the equipment dates to the the late 1950's.  I was hoping someone might be able to identify the gear so I could have a more accurate date.

looks like she defeated the purpose of the quick release on the weight belt by tucking the excess inside the belt..

It looks to be the older style bdl hoses & mouth piece. I would say early 50's.

Isn't that the daughter of one of the old-timers from the board?    One of you 1000s of dives in your log book before you stopped logging folks need to fess-up and admit when she had the pic taken!

(decided not to pick on any specific member, so just left it as a general "elder-slam"...  maybe because there were too many targets to pick from!)

I'm going to say that it's early 60's as that looks to be a Dacor Clipper double hose reg.

I started diving in 1962 and don't remember seeing those circular weights and really narrow weight belts being used.  The buckle on the weight belt also looks 50's vintage with really small D rings.  The masks could be 50's or 60's, but I'm not sure about the suits they're wearing.  Without seeing the first stage, it's tough to identify the regualtor just by the mouthpiece design .. could be a Healthways, Dacor, etc.

And no...she's not my daughter...or wife.

The lady is wearing a old, old dry suit and the guy is wearing a wet suit? I started diving in 1957, and had only seen one or two dry suits like that one and they where considered a waste of $$$. It had to be taken in early 50's or they just gave her the suit for a photo take.

I seem to recall that the Charles was one of the most polluted rivers back then.

...and my gear is a heck of a lot more modern than the stuff in the newspaper picture.  I have my spiffy new Dacor Dart regulator, my custom wetsuit, and a real SPG in addition to my J valve tank that warned me when I was down to 300psi.  That's a depth gauge on my wrist...no BCD of course.  I was always very trendy.....

Look closely at my hose and mouth piece, as it is not that clear a picture, Ken's hoses are shorter and mouth piece is straight, my hoses are longer and the mouth piece is contoured ( curved ). Although you can't see in this pic my hoses are like the bellows of an accordion and Ken's are molded ( rounded ). I purchased this hose and mouth piece assembly shortly after they came out, around 1959 or 1960. The hoses cleared your head and mask with no problem and made it easy to buddy breathe. This News clip was in Nov. of 1962. Many of the guys changed over also. Notice the weights. This does'nt date your News clip, but if the lady actually dove that day she was using some real old gear!

The mouthpieces were somewhat unique on many of the vintage regulators I've seen. Look how thick the healthways mouthpiece is compared to the one in the pic you posted.

The earlier Dacor is somewhat similar but not quite when you compare the grooves on the cylindrical part of the mouthpiece that line up with the bite.

based on the apparent length and diameter of the mouthpiece visible in the picture and the grooves on the cylindrical portion I'm still saying it's a later Dacor reg.

Other manufacturers had mouthpieces of different shapes like:

Voit

The masks could easily be from the early '50s, but the design was stable for about 15 years so no prizes go with that date.  The hoses look like an early USD rig, without the check valves. If so that would be late 40s to mid 50s  The backpack straps scream a Torqumanda inspired Dolphin rig from the Late 40s to early 60s, if that, so it should predate contoured backpacks. The round weights look home cast as they are about the diameter of a tomato soup can. REA's suit may be a back entry dry suit instead of a wet one. The suit folds under his knife  and chin don't look thick enough to be a wet suit heavy enough for that area. "Tube" dry suits were early to mid 50s.

Dr Ray McAllister may have a better time line from just looking at the gear involved. He is one of the few still breathing who was an active diver trainer then. I'd probably focus on the knives a time marker too if digging through old catalogs. Those changed fairly often.

Chris (CapeCoddiver) is right, why would anyone *ever* dive in the Charles, especially back then?

I sailed there at BU in the late 60s and early 70s and at first the water was solid gray.  Later it improved to just solid brown, a big step forward.  But the viz was still zero.

Some folks used to get tetanus shots just on general principle.

Educated guess from the buildings in the background, mid to late '50s.

Perhaps you can check with Boston University and find out when Richard E Anderson  and/or Eleanor F Champion graduated?  If so, that's at most a four year window for the picture.
