I had to purchase a new mask because of corrective implants in eyes.
I did the toothpaste scrub and no luck.
The vis around here is bad enought with out having to look thru a layer of fog.
So, whats the latest to get rid of the scum ???
Soft scrub ?

Your Q has me giggling over my experience with a new mask last year. I think, imho, newer masks-you just have to use more elbow grease with getting that new mask film stuff off. I did the toothpaste thing three (!) times and still had minor but annoying fogging issues. And flooding my mask a bit to fix it is not fun. So- I went old school. I have never (intentionally) "hocked a lugey" (I don't even know how to SPELL that!!lol) until I realized it was that or fogging. Worked like a charm. If you can't, perhaps you like your dive buddy enough to have them do it :) It sure isn't pretty- but I now have the best lugey hocking capabilities this side of the Mississippi me thinks. Gross.
Edited: spelling issues

You made me laugh.  Gotta wonder what they put on those lenses.

Guess I will practice spitting.  I always thought it wasn't a girl thing.  LOL

I know there are packaged defogging things, but it's one more thing you'd have to carry/buy -- and, yes, it's certainly not ladylike or attractive, and at least for me, an acquired art/skill.:) But, as they say, mom-spit cleans everything ;) I'd give that mask another round of toothpaste and well, you know...have at it. Go girl. Lol
Edit: oh, I also imho think soft scrub is too abrasive; more than you'd think.

First use Toothpaste (not gel), baking soda, or soft-scrub. Then dish detergent. Use an old toothbrush. Scrub glass and skirt.
You may have to repeat.

You may also try the top rack of your dishwasher, inside of mask facing spray, with the heater/drier switched OFF.

The other thing I found, after you've scrubbed it real good with the non-gel toothpaste, is to wash it real good, then use glasses cleaner (the stuff with alcohol in it, for eyeglasses, not windex) and spray it real good, then rinse again.
Good luck - hope you don't continue to have the mask from hell!

Try this: Cut a potato in half and rub back and forth on the lens, rinse and use the other half of the potato and repeat rubbing back and forth, rinse and try out your mask. If film is still there cut back each potato half about a half inch and repeat. No abrasion used ! I believe the starch in the potato does the cleaning.
This should do it !

Aquaseal makes a product called Sea Buff that's specifically used to clean new masks. Use that a few times in a row and then follow up with a very small amount of Dawn dishwashing liquid. Scrub with a soft toothbrush. Use warm to slightly hot water. Rinse well. Sea Drops GOLD is the best defogger I've used...........

I use Softscrub to clean and then use 500 PSI Defog because it also cleans when putting it on for a defog as well.  It comes in very small 2 oz bottle that easily fits in your mask case as well.

It says it is good for 3 dives as welll, but I do it every time I dive and then clean with Softscrub once I am done diving.

Here is a link for a review of the 500 PSI product:

SoftScrub is the best solution that I have found...also..if your mask has not been used in a while, use it again...those fumes continue to emit from the silicon skirt over time. I agree about the SEADROPS GOLD defogger...it is "clearly" the best. I also take great care to wash my face before I put the mask on to get rid of any make-up, moisture lotion, or sun protective creme...

A fogging mask can ruin a dive!

At first I use toothpaste, but I use baby shampoo on my lense to stop the fogging.  Even the live-aboard I just got back from had baby shampoo as a de-fogger.

Take a lighter in one hand and hold the mask over it about 12 inches with the other.

Light the lighter, then slowly lower the mask closer to the lighter while keeping the lighter centered on the lens. Stop lowering when the lens silicon starts burning off, then quickly burn off the remaining silicon by moving the lighter in a circular fashion underneath the lens.

Don't freak out when the lens silicon turns black and melts off but do freak out if you melt the lens or the surrounding mask silicon because you just ruined your mask.

Repeat with other lens.

Rinse off any burnt waste.

Enjoy.

A dive shop employee in Atlanta (home of Coca-Cola) suggested letting the mask sit in Coke overnight -- she was serious.  It must have some nice chemicals.  I never did it (toothpaste worked just fine) but it might be worth a try if all else fails.

I would not be surprised if this were true and highly effective.

Just a quick Google of cleaning uses for Coke, and you will never drink the stuff again.
Well, except maybe in a big girl beverage; then it's fine

I'll stick to my beach side lugey-hocking. :)

Coca Cola is recommended for cleaning battery terminals in your car.....Oh yeah...not to mention the job that it does on tooth enamel.
Not pointing fingers just at Coke...most pop products equally corrosive....

I like to soak my new mask in Dawn Dishwashing detergent overnight, scrub with toothpaste - I time myself, at least 10 minutes of scrubbing with non-gel toothpaste, then soak, scrub, soak, scrub.

This is the way that i was taught when I first got certified and it works like a charm. I just did it for my sister's new mask (she just got certified!!!) --- she wasn't scrubbing hard enough to get the film off.

Now that I read it it seems like a lot of work. Next time I am trying the lighter trick.

How do you guys all get your masks so foggy? All I have ever done is wipe with toothpaste using my finger, rinse off, and then use a drop of mask defogger each time -- works fine.

When they're brand-new, you get what you get. Sometimes in the production of the lenses the cutting oil stays on the lenses and you just can't get it off easily. My first mask was that way, and my second mask was that way. I went five years just thinking I had to live with it before I went batshitcrazy with the toothpaste, lens cleaner and then toothpaste again before I realized it was the mask's fault, not mine. Now I'm much better, and so is the mask

My atomic frameless one was a PITA. I thought it was me, until I read somewhere here in a search that apparently I wasn't the only one who had this happen..

Wow... I've never had that much trouble and I have several masks.  Maybe it's because some of them are prescription  -- different process? The last mask has the lenses glued inside the original lenses. The non-Rx masks aren't a problem either, although I don't use them that often.  My main concern has always been just getting one to fit and not leak.

I think a lot of the fogging has to do with how much residual air is coming through your nose in the mask. It took me forever to realize this (and lots of scrubbing and trying various brand and homemade defoggers, including the hallowed "patooie" exudate) -- but now that I'm aware of the issue, and I pay more attention to keeping my nose out of the air cycle (for lack of a better way of expressing it), my mask stays MUCH clearer.

Try this: breathe as if you were breathing through your reg. Now put your hand directly under your nostrils. Feel any air? Now keep trying until you get no air moving over your hand. I'd be interested in hearing from any of you who try this to find whether it works for you.

jan t. (counting down until my next trip to warm clear water!)
