I was wondering if anyone has ever bought from Leisure Pro.  Are they a good place to buy from?

I've purchased from them in the past and have no complaints.

They are OK as long as you don't want the manufacturer's warrantee.

Personally, I much prefer www.scubatoys.com for online purchases.

To read about the warrantee situation, see this thread of 04/23/09:

While I have had no complaints about Leasure Pro they do seel things they aren't supposed to on line which voids manufacturers warranties. I have started using Dolphin SCUBA almost exclusively for my on line purchases as they have a huge selection and are very competitive. They are also authorised to sell alot of brands on line and the ones they are not authorised to esell they show on line but won't sell on line.

This post would have elicited a firestorm. It's interesting how times have changed.

Chief, I have purchased from LP on several occasions, but I have had a few problems. They once sent me a metric pressure gauge, for example. They are also not the most pleasant people to talk to on the phone, but maybe that's just the "New York-ness" coming through. Generally, I have been happy. That said, I would be reluctant to buy a regulator or BC from them, unless it is one of the brands for which they are an authorized source. I wouldn't hesitate on masks, fins, wetsuits and accessories.

As a matter of fact, just last week I spent an hour trying to find a replacement compass for my Sherwood Wisdom console. It's a cheap, plastic compass that would have to cost no more than $3 to build. Sherwood's retail price, $59.95. Not one dealer would come off the full retail price.

Leisure pro, $23.95 plus $3 shipping.

I have no local dive shop.  Our only local shop closed their doors three years ago and, yes, I did buy virtually all my gear from them until they closed.  The closest dive shop is now a four hour round trip, and they have limited hours, so it's not like I can just wander over to look over the latest gear.  I depend on the online retailers for much of my purchases and have bought from several outfits over the years.

I have bought from LP and always had a positive experience.  In fact, all my online purchases have gone well.  I bought a Mares Puck from Dolphin Scuba and it had a bad band.  I sent it back and they replaced it immediately.  I've had questions about some of the stuff I've bought from LP and they always answered any questions I had on the phone.

I can understand why some manufacturers would want to support in store sales and discourage Internet sales regarding dive gear.  It makes more sense to have a knowledgable sales person guide the buyer through the process, especially if the buyer is a new or inexperienced diver.  Unfortunately, that doesn't work for many of us and the Internet becomes a prime source of dive gear.  As far as warranties, I know of no legal way a manufacturer can deny warranty work on a defective product that they produced...regardless of what they say.  I'd love to see this go to court some day.

I'll buy from them for accessory items but if my life depends on it, I usually buy it from my local dive shop. I prefer to support the dive shops in my area - granted I still have a choice, even though several have closed in the last several years. I've found that because I am so supportive of my shops, they are often very likely to give me a break on pricing. And I definitely feel safer knowing that my life support gear (in particular) has been thoroughly checked at my shop before I use it.

Your mileage may obviously vary.

LeisurePro is authorized by: Sherwood, Mares, Oceanic and Zeagle to name a few.  I  would expect LP would offer full warranties by the mfgs. who authorize them.  LP is too darn big not to allow them to sell your products.  I heard a rumor once that LP sells more than all the dive shops in FL.  LP offers consumers more choice of products than any one dive shop and they seem to have it in stock too.

How true - Everyone used to badmouth internet companies,  Grey market, underground international import and export mastery, prices not available to anyone else, fire sales, bankruptcy sales etc...  I have claimed for years that the dive mfgs. have allowed sales to internet companies for years now its easy to find the mfgs admit that LP and others are Factory authorized.   LP is huge and they move lots of product from many mfgs.  If you  know what your needs are you can get some real bargains.

If I find something on Leisure Pro that I want I will print off the page and take it to my lds and they will match the price, not including the sales tax.  They would not do that unless they were still making a profit.

You are lucky if your LDS matches LP prices.  What about all the products and brands LP has that your LDS does not carry?  I rarely see a local retail outlet match internet prices.  Its a different business model running retail with overhead costs that LP does not have.  If your LDS matches prices good for you but I suspect they will not be able to exist long term.  If everyone brought in LP prices to the LDS to be matched - Bye Bye LDS.

My old LDS would always try to match Internet pricing.  In all but one or two cases, they managed to come up with a competitive price.  Most shops should be able to at least get within 10% of the best price which for me, was always good enough.  Now that my LDS is gone, I just shop with my keyboard and stay with online retailers that I've had good experiences with.  Based on my own experience, LP is a safe bet.

My LDS also tries to match internet pricing. They see the wqriting on the wall and do their best. Now there are times they tell me flat out they can't but if they get close I still buy from them as I like the personal service.

Perhaps if your LDS did not try to match prices they would still be around.

Its very difficult for a full sevice LDS who has brick and mortar business model ans related expenses along with limited product lines and inventory costs to compete against a large internet retailer who has a very small retail store and a huge warehouse for internet business.  They are two different business models with different cost structures.

I too buy from LP and have had been satisfied.  I have also visited LP the store in NY once, but I wasn't impressed but they had tons of stuff in the back.

Dive shops are great for training,  rentals, service and especially for new divers who need help with gear selection and sizing.  I get upset when someone uses their LDS spend all sorts of time getting educated and tries on all sorts of equipment then walks out and buys the same gear for 20% less through a large internet retailer.  They used the LDS. plain and simple.  I guess thats retail  unfortunately.  Internet retailers do not have those issues.

I guess I am lucky - since for years my local lds (brick and mortatr) was also a pretty good online store (albeit by another name).  lds is/was Aqua Adventures in Richardson, Tx.  Online store is www.crazyscuba.com.  If they don't have what I need, then www.scubatoys.com will - and they also have a brick and mortar store within easy driving distance from Plano, TX.  Now that I am primarily in LA, l try to use the lds here, but the two online shops (where I have traded for about 10 years now) always beat their prices, even when I add in the shipping charges.

If my LDS doesn't carry what I need, he'll order it and will come as close to any internet price he can. I recently needed an adjustment on my reg, which he was more than happy to take care of. He is a nice guy to talk to, and consistently gives me the 'hook up' whenever he can. That being said, since I already own all of my own gear I wouldn't be too distraught to have to move to BFE where there won't be a shop, but I will always go through this LDS.

As a side note, I shopped around at some other shops in the Houston area and realized that someone expecting you to drop some mad loot in their shop, they should treat you well. I don't care if I live right around the corner from those guys, they aren't getting one red cent from me or any of my dive buddies.

Actually, the husband and wife who ran northern New Hampshire's only dive shop decided to retire. The retail shop was a break even operation, but they did make money on classes. They also had a lucrative commercial diving operation and had several municipal and hospital contracts. After many years, they just figured it was time.

Why not?  LP has a larger selection than any LDS I have seen.  For a Wetsuit you order your two top picks then return the one that doesn't fit and you have still saved a bundle over the LDS.  Most LDS want you to pay for special orders along with restocking fees.  I have ordered Regs, BC's and Wetsuits from LP and retuened some items and even had them repair a reg under warranty.  My LDS wants 2 weeks for reg service and they don't do it onsite and they send it to someone miles away.  The simplest of repairs is 3 days.   LP did the reg service in 2 weeks Door to door.

Steer clear of them, they are crooks.  They tried to cheat me and still lie about it to this day, right up until I sent them the reciept that they tried to cheat me over, then they just slink away.

How did they try to cheat you?  I'm curious about what happened since my own experiences with them have been fine.  Did they ever make it right?

I too would like to hear more about the details of the dissatisfaction.

I have done business with LP at least 6 times.  I have returned items and sent things back for service without incident.  I have also bought items from LP, then the price dropped the next week and I called LP about it and the gave me a credit for the difference.  Not a compalint here !!.  Never a problem.

But don't expect to use something for a few weeks then return it and say you don't like it and want a full refund.  That doesn't fly as they are wise to people who want to use them as a free rental service.
