Did you read the letters section? There's a letter in there from Ken Silverstein in Princeton, NJ, who apparently did not know what there was diving in South Florida until he read about it in SD, even though he had visited the area several times. I really don't know what to say.

That is either the funniest joke I think I've ever heard or he just really really wanted to get whatever gift they were giving away!

Maybe all his previous visits were in the Everglades.

I live near Princeton and didn't know there was a Dec. 2009 SD, I haven't gotten one in months!

scattered sightings in your area, but some say there is no such creature and dismiss the whole thing as a hoax.

I can add this, kinda in this guys defence. When I certified I lived in the NJ/NY area. We flew to the Keys for my cert dives and then went home. For the next 2 years we would fly to the Keys to dive. Never knew about the diving off the Fla coast.
Finally in 2002 we decided to move to Fla to dive. We settled in Deerfield Beach. For the next year we would drive down to the Keys every couple of weeks and dive.
Not until we joined a local dive club in Lighthouse Point did we learn about the diving right off our coast.
So see, it can (and did) happen.....
