The DEMA show is back in Orlando this year. This is the industry gathering of ‘Everything dive related’. It’s a bit smaller this year, but there is plenty of new stuff to make this very valuable and you will learn something new when you attend. I can’t believe how many people I ran into today. I barely stepped out of my van and met up with divers I haven’t seen in a long while. 75 people and 3 hours later and my handshakes were getting sore. I’m seeing folks from even the old DiverLink days, and all the old divemasters and instructors.  Alright, enough with the crap about meeting so many friends, show us some toy pictures already!

So you go diving and you get bent on a far off liveaboard. Blow up this portable chamber right on the boat and start doing a table number 6. Comes with air and pure O2 ports as well as a comm system and windows.

This cart is pretty cool. It’s like a jacket for your AL80 and at the bottom are 2 good sized wheels. You 1st slide the jacket onto your tank then mount your BC, regs and bungee them tight so nothing dangles. It has a separate pull handle and you wheel your whole rig down the parking lot, etc, to the boat or entry effortlessly. When you get to the Boat/entry, the 2 wheels pop off and store right underneath the tank boot since they are the same size and also made from stainless steel for no rust. Then put on your BC and go diving with it. No drag.  Very cool and they may come out with a version for fat steels too

You got a monster truck, then you need a monster beach gear hauler. This thing will easily handle even a Rhode Island beach entry over the rocks. Holds 2 -3 tanks and all your gear. Then it folds up!

SeaDoo has a different size scooter for what ever you need.

This is a floating flag reel. I’m not really sure about this concept since most of the time you want the reel underwater with you. But I guess it does have applications for training dives. I’m still scratching my head on this one.

My NuAir buddies are just kicking butt with the newest high tech continuous blending compressors. Literally push button mixes. Want 28%? Push a button and out it comes. It’s alike a soda can machine at the gas station with a dozen flavors inside.

So many travel options, so little time.

Flowered snorkel vests. If you just had a PFO closed, you’ll be floatin & ‘stylin while waiting your 90 days to get back under water!

Camera’s, Camera’s, & more Camera’s. Small, Medium and ‘Holy Crud!”

The pool is open and they have underwater robots you can play with. I might get some bottom time tomorrow, if I can snag a scooter below to play with.

Got Snot? Get the Neti-Pot !!

A valve position color indicator to visually see if the person’s air is on (green) or off (red). If you own a liveaboard  dive boat with a whole bunch of tanks, this will visually show you if a tank is turned off. Works with all makes of valves.

Wanna make a million dollars? You’ll need one of these underwater treasure finders

This was really cool too. It’s an electronic buddy signaler. It suction cups to your mask and under the suction cup it has a color changing LED light. As you take your finger and break the optical beam on the front where the yellow target circles are, you can ‘tap’ it 1, 2, or 3 times and transmit an LED message to your buddy up to 200 feet away. The colored lights also tell you ‘how far’ away your buddy is and if he is out of range by signal strength. Pretty cool!

These are some big friggin heavy dive boots in the OMS booth. They come with handles they are so big.

Anyone want to guess who’s standing next to me? Hint - He can delete your D2D account if don’t play nice.

A new CO2 sensor which is critical for rebreathers. I have not seen the data specs on this yet.

Mares has the new computer that was on ScubaDiving Magazine’s cover. You can download a JPG picture of a map or course like a cave route and bring it up on the display

Intova has a new computer that looks like an I-phone. It runs 2 different algorithm’s at the same time so you can compare them. I still need to get more info on this.

Atomic has a new LCD color dive computer with built in compass and this thing is sharp and so very bright. The booth was so crowded I couldn’t get a clear picture but I got to fondle one and it is sweet. DivaDiver let me play with it for 30 seconds but everyone is on top of this thing. I’ll post a picture tomorrow, but this thing has everyone buzzing.

This was very cool. It is a tiny 10 pound Scooter. You can pack this thing in your luggage for a trip and see 4 times as much of the reef as all the other diver’s on your boat. Has 3 speeds, runs almost 4 mph which is smokin fast for a scooter, and a 2 hour burn time on it’s lithium battery and recharges in 4 hours. This is going to change DPV’s and you’ll start to see more on the boats.
http://www.innovativescuba.com/

I also sat in the DAN Ultra Sound seminar and I’ll write up a separate review on DCS and bubbles. Did you know there is new technology just this year from dual frequency doppler that we can now measure the size of a bubble inside your body and this has never been done accurately before? Stay tuned, I’ve got more bubble info and the latest DCS information coming to you later this week.

And I’ve got a lot of people coming to the D2D happy hour(details at the top of this page) I think we’re going to end up with 30-40 people at this blow out of a party. Comb your hair and get the spinach off your teeth, pictures will be taken!! See you Friday!!

Post up a reply if you see something you want me to get more info on an item or even if you enjoyed this DEMA photo post!!

P.S.  AllenHost (LarryL) kicks arse for easy picture hosting !!

Chuck doesn't know it yet, but we are taking a seminar together on Saturday at 11am.

Plan to max your credit card during this time and I'll keep him busy.

P.S.  It's actually a great study review on how we do our half stops and is packed with the very latest findings and results data since now some are saying don't do half stops.  We'll see, but I want to know what's going on when we are getting into fish fights at 140 O-Too-Deep!!

Lloyd and I have got to get to a DEMA show one of these years.  Though it would probably be dangerous to let Lloyd loose with a credit card while there!

As usual there are a lot of products that are solutions looking for a problem.  As far as that sccoter doing 4mph for 2 hours, I'd have to say I doubt it.

The Apocalypse rebreather is there at the Micropore booth as well. Allegedly has real time CO2 monitoring and is (as has been the case for the last year) just one step away from release to early buyers.

I was at the DEMA pool today. It's chest high and I could walk along the side of the pool with it. Even though I didn't have any drag on it, for 10 pounds, this thing has more power than any of the SeaDoo.

A dive shop owner was underwater playing with it and he as flying around the pool underwater. It was enough that he was making a wake in 3 foot and knocking water out of the pool. He bought 4 of them on the spot.

I agree, this thing needs alot more testing and getting beat on, but for the power and speed, I'm impressed and thinking about getting one.

So I can't even get near the Atomic booth it's so packed with buyers.

I went to the Intova booth to bang on the computer I saw yesterday. The computer is actually a real I-phone (or HP, or other phone). You take your I-phone (3 version with accelerametor) and then load it up with a computer app that I swear looks like the mobile V-planner version. After it's loaded and sealed in the waterproof pelican like case, you take it underwater and it's a full function dive computer that can even switch bubble algorithims on the fly.

The very first thing I said standing at the booth, was OK it's sealed how to you change the buttons on the screen underwater? The I-phone senses when it it hit on the side so it changes functions when it's hit with your palm underwater, very cool.

But then I said how does it sense depth?, They came up with a tiny pressure transducer that has a bluetooth function to send reading inside the case to the Iphone. They also are just finishing up on the tank pressure transmitter too and that will give you a psi reading.

The dive computer industry is radically being turned on it's head this year. It has everyone buzzing at the show.  It's really coming about that you will buy your computer and software separately just like you buy a PC now.

Also saw Fugu, NLucey, SharkTails, Ryan from Reef photo, and too many others.

Tomorrow, this place is going to explode with divers, since the wave forecast is crud and everyone is looking for something to do.

great review John!   Hardly surprising

I particularly love the camera setups on the scooters.    Good thing I have oodles and oodles of money to throw away with this hobby!    NOT

The tank with the visual dial to show if it's on or not seems like one of those no brainers someone should have thought of a long time ago.....duh!     It just makes sense.

Interesting but there seems like there are to many external interface points for me to feel comfortable.

Did you get to play with the new Shearwater color computer with the OLAD display?

I've got appointments for liquidvision, Shearwater (booth's almost side by side, that's uncomfortable) and also with VR today too.

A full seminar of meetings with the lawyers, the doctors, and Nick Lucey's TV show debut at 4pm to finish it up.  These seminars are incredible and I'm spending more and more time in them since they have the latest cutting edge data. I'll do a separate report on them after everything is done.

Then off to a much bigger than expected D2D happy hour.

I'll be volunteering at the REEF booth for most of the morning for anyone who has the chance to stop by and say hi.
I'll also be attending Nick's 'Into The Drink' TV preview today and I can't wait to see it.
I attended some great seminars yesterday--Backscatter is doing seminars at their booth on all aspects of u/w photography and videography which are fantastic.  I got some great tips on new lighting techniques from Keri Wilks and I can't wait to try them out.
The Anse Chastenet seminar at the end of the day was a hoot with free-flowing champange and a free raffle for a week-long dive package at the resort for two.  I didn't win yesterday, but I plan on winning today!
I can't wait to see everyone at the D2D happy hour tonight.  As with any other D2D event, I know it will be a hoot!  Robyn

I thought the same thing about the valve handle. What a simple idea.

Here's the website if anyone is interested. There's a video showing how it works and how to install it.

I searched online and found prices for the Bladefish 3000 ($599) and the Bladefish 5000 ($799) from a shop (DiversBestBuy) on ebay taking orders for mid-November delivery. Not sure what the Bladefish 1000 sells for.

Tiller, I'm sorry I completely missed your post.

The Bladefish was being sold by A-Plus marine. I'm good friends with several of their company reps and they know I talk to all the shops, so they would not give me any info on pricing.

My house was full of guests to attend to as well as final details on happy hour I organized. It was a jammed packed weekend and I didn't get a chance to get all the info I needed.

There was no price on the mfgr link, and I mistakenly assumed it was so new that it wasn't priced yet. I should have just googled it like Mark did.

Just returned home from an exciting, exhilarating and exhausting DEMA. It was great seeing some of you there (John, Robyn, Ellen, Chuck, Angie, Pete, Kerry, Jim, et al.) -- albeit WAY too briefly (some unfortunately as I was running between meetings) -- and a big shout out to all who attended the world premiere of "Into the Drink" ... it was so packed that they had to turn people away from the seminar room because of a fire hazard -- no joke. In addition to premiering our Costa Rica episode, we also presented a trailer featuring several of our Season #1 destinations. If you're interested, you can view it here: http://www.intothedrink.tv/watch . We also announced the winner of our Costa Rica dive vacation sweeps, John Schmidt. Thanks to all who entered, and check our site for the next dive vacation giveaway.

Sure, it was a relatively quieter show compared to DEMAs past, however, most of the folks I talked to said it was a case of quality over quantity. I will say one thing, my only regret was not being able to make it to the happy hour at Adobe Gilas!

Hope everyone made it home safely! Going straight to bed to catch up on some ZZZs!

Nick

Just a couple of quick pictures from the show floor.

I'll right I was shaking when I took this picture, But I don't see mermaids that often

This one is for TXDM. Very cool side mount setup that got lots and lots of attention

Atomic's new computer is very sweet. I finally was able to get close enough to play around with it.

Picture with the ScubaDiving.com magazine staff. I had a great time meeting the whole staff including Ty Sawyer. Below is Brad McGonigle, Ellene, Johnoly, and Laura C.S. Walker
