Hi, I plan to go to Cozumel next winter.  I know that the cenote and drift diving are excellent but I also like to go diving on my own from time to time.  Is there a good hotel with diving activity on site as well as some kind of honest shore diving ??

Thanks for the advice

Guy

Unless you're cave cert, you'll have to go the mainland... - 11/5/2009 6:47:18 AM

....for cenote diving. Any dive shop on Coz can arrange a day trip for you. It's quite different than OW diving and you ought to give it a whirl.

Sparky's advice of SCC should work quite well long as you're okay with basic accommodations and food. It's got more shore sites than any other resort. Also can do Chankanaab National Park (http://www.cozumelparks.com/). There's a small entrance fee and you'll need to hire a DM there.

Get you started?

See you learn something new every day. I never knew that you could do cenote diving with out being caev certified! If I ever go to Coz again, I just might do that!

Cenote diving is cavern, not cave, diving and...+ - 11/5/2009 1:33:21 PM

....is generally defined as diving a naturally occurring overhead environment while remaining within sight of it's entrance/an illuminated exit.

In the Yucatan you simply need to be accompanied by a guide who is cave cert and a DM. Also, the groups are limited by number.

This is what I used to do . I'd stay at SCUBA club Cozumel inn at night I grabbed taxicab and go south almost to international dock. We would jump in the water and drift back to the hotel. This takes about an hour and 40 minutes and about 20 feet of water. You can see a lot of fish at night. Then get out at the SCUBA club inn.
