Exactly two months surgery on my collarbone where I got an extra piece of hardware, I returned to the sea. The LDS chartered the Great Escape out of Long Beach to Catalina. We went to the far west and and started diving on Johnson's Rock. It was a great dive site - a rocky spire in about 105 feet of water. The top of the larger pinnacle was about 60 feet deep and there was a shallower pinnacle that topped out at about 45 feet.

Here are a few photos that I took with my new G11 (replaced my flooded G9). The eel in the top right is the happiest looking eel that I have photographed.

The pinnacle had a large number of California Sidegill seaslugs. They were quite large, being 2+ inches long.

I fed a couple of abalone, including the largest one that I have ever seen (not the one in the photo).

I came across another eel on the last dive. Unlike the first one, this one looks kind of sad.

He had quite a few peppermint shrimp living with him.

I only found one octopus - a two-spot.

And last, a California Scorpionfish.

The new G11 did very well - particularly since I was just using the internal flash - and a little additional lighting from my cannister light.

Sorry about the couple of photos that are larger than the others and are blowing things out a bit. I'm having a hard time getting them fixed on Photobucket.

Glad to hear you are back in the water. Looks like you found lots of fun critters.
I think the eel in the first photo is happy because it has a buddy (or maybe a mate? ).  The solo one is lonely  .

Killer eel shots and I'm so glad to hear you're back in the water.  Hopefully we'll each be able to attend the Truth Trip next year and I can finally lay eyes on the person behind these awesome photos! Robyn

Haha, the eels in the first shot do look happy and the eel in the second does look sad. I didn't even notice that.

Fugu,

I'm going to give you some more details later, but I need to check the camera settings.

I was using the G11 in the Canon housing. I was bouncing around between Program mode, aperture priority, and manual. I was set to ISO 100. I still don't have a feel for what worked best yet. I had a bit of trouble with getting the focus. I had set it to a center spot (large or small) but still had to work at it. I used the internal flash, but also was using my canister light for additional lighting and focusing.

You can see a few more shots and the settings at Photobucket album

I am very happy with the camera so far. The shots that I did get looked very sharp. I meant to use Raw+jpeg but didn't realize that the Raw wasn't turned on.

David,
Great Shots. But you went and cost me money? Now I have to upgrade to the G11.
